Hourglass quad journey

I have been neglecting this blog, but I have been diligently using my makeup collection, as well as trying out some new products. While I try to be reasonable and keep a pace of not overbuying, I do still try out new products. I am much less shy about returning stuff I don’t like or pass them along if they don’t work for me. This way I use only products that work really well on me and fit together, so I can put them on without much fuss and make sure it always looks good and not overdone.

Today I wanted to talk about Hourglass face palettes, particularly the ones you can make yourself. Every year Hourglass has this option that you can chose between any (available at the time) face powder, blush, highlighter and bronzer to make you custom palette.

I have wrote last year how I made a somewhat impulse purchase and made my own palette. I called it “the palette I shouldn’t have bought”. The shades should have been perfect for me, as they are on the warm side. It looked like this: two blushes, highlighter and a bronzer. I used this palette maybe 10 times. Every time I put it on, despite being a beautiful product, I would not like how it looks on me. The blushes (Lucid glow and Oasis glow) are just too intense for my soft autumn features despite being on the warm red coral side. The highlighter, Celestial strobe light, is gorgeous with its warm gold vibe, but a bit too intense for my liking these days. I do like the Diffused light bronzer, but it is the one that is available in the single pan (both mini and full size), so I can get it if ever miss it.

When this year Hourglass came out with this concept, I was sure I was not going to buy it. I had every intension of resisting. As I was using up my very old 6 pan Hourglass palette, I wanted to replace the diffused light powder, so I started to look into the other shades. I really liked the look of soft light powder, so I added those two which meant I had two more spots in the new palette. I was running low on the bronzer, so I added natural bronze pan, as it looked matte and light enough for me. This meant that the last spot could go to a choice of a blush. I never saw this peach color before (Peach fusion) and it looked good in the swatches and videos I saw prior to making the final decision. So this is my new face quad. I am much happier with this one as it is soft and understated and I actually use it. I dip into at least one of the shades, a few times a week.

I have a friend who will look gorgeous in this warm palette as her undertone is warm and it can take more of the warmth in makeup than me. This was all supposed to work on my autumn features, but I have underestimated the softness that I need to look good and not look overdone, especially if I just put a blush and mascara on for example. I am happy this warm palette will go to good hands and will be used and loved.

This is just an example that how it is still a journey for me to find what I love and tweak the ideal colors even when I am working in the autumn palette.

These days I am much more into actual painting and drawing than painting my face, so that also curbs any desire to buy new makeup.
